A Labour MP who has repeatedly criticised Shabana Mahmood’s immigration crackdown has attacked plans to house more migrants near her constituency.
Rachael Maskell said proposals to house around 1,200 asylum seekers at RAF Linton-on-Ouse in North Yorkshire are “unsuitable” because there will be six men for every woman
living there. Her comments come after Andy Burnham said middle-class areas should “play their part” in accepting asylum seeker accommodation in their communities.
Downing Street has since admitted to The Telegraph that this approach will be more expensive for taxpayers. A spokesman said the Prime Minister recognises it would cost
“more money to do it more fairly”.
